It will work GREAT as a portraiture lens - it is sharp, has a good bokeh and low amount of distortions. Here is a portrait taken with 24-120mm set to 50mm, f/4, D7000, from a distance of ~ 1,5 meter:

@Jonathan: "Bates" in what sense of the word?
Pictaker64 was pondering over the use of a 50mm lens for portraiture (since there is/was a lot of discussions on whether is 50mm focal length suitable for that purpose or not - many photographers believe that it is too short to be used as a portraiture lens, especially when mounted on a full frame camera)...

That was a rude allusion back to the conversation about a snap of a neon motel sign. The lady above is probably your recently deceased favourite aunt and so my joke is probably in bad taste. They usually are.

:)No problem, no hard feelings at all. It's the photo of my mom (she is alive&well, by the way:victorious:). So, you aimed at the "Bates motels" or something like that (I am very fond of English language and british/american culture in general, so I use every opportunity to learn some new facts, allusions, proverbs, non-standard/colloquial expressions etc.- that's why I was so amused with this remark of yours)...
