From about 1977 at Sutton, IL, an Elgin, Joliet & Eastern freight is on the move. Taken with my Nikkormat FTn on Plus-X film, developed and printed in a basement darkroom built by my Dad for my brother and I.

More Geeky Railroad Trivia: Those "A" markers on the signals denote Absolute, meaning that with a red signal displayed, a train must stop and stay. At locations without "A" markers, trains are permitted to stop and proceed at restricted speed on a red signal, prepared to stop upon sighting any obstruction.

Wow Sandpatch another shot from the way-back machine. (y) I was a young guy back then & also developed negatives & prints in the basement.

Is that your Volvo wagon parked at the crossing?

You have a very sharp eye -- yes it is, a 1976 Model 265. It found its way into another railroad picture in June 1978 somewhere in IN. The 7443 is a former NYC GP-9. I guess the NYC had no need for dynamic brakes. :)

I'm sure you too enjoyed your darkroom a bunch. Young photographers these days don't know what they're missing.

Oh man a grimy old CR Geep. That takes me back. Your way-back machine sure does take me back to a great time in my life. Chasing trains without a care in the world. Thanks Sandpatch, your posts here make me smile. :)

We're both blessed to have been able to enjoy that era. Good times for sure, sometimes even in the rain. I shot this at Hopewell, NJ on the former Reading main, 07/23/1976. CR was barely four months old and it was business as usual on the RDG. We drove east from IL to visit my cousins, and on this day, my Mom and Aunt dropped me off here while they went shopping. Today's Norfolk Southern southbound had a helping hand in the form of a Burlington Northern Santa Fe locomotive in the Santa Fe's old "Warbonnet" paint scheme. I had a good spot picked out and had decent light ...... until the train was delayed, rain moved in and I had to abandon my spot for this grab shot as I stepped out of my parked car. Nice catch Sandpatch. That rain makes the faded paint on the Warbonnet shine once again. Although it doesn't hep the mismatched battery doors.

This afternoon's Train P85, a "local" that serves various industries along the line. I had good light until another round of dark clouds moved in behind me. The 9864 is a GE Dash 9-44CW packing 4,400 HP. More geeky railroad trivia -- the fresnel lenses in railroad signals greatly intensify the light and they are carefully aimed with elevation and position to strike the Engineman's eyes so as to be certain they're seen. This is not new; it's been done this way for 90 years now. [D5100]

Yesterday's train Y102 at Columbia, SC. I didn't have time to set up for this guy, so parked, jumped out and tripped the shutter.

Note that the second locomotive has no access doors on its long hood. It's a "slug" unit with no engine inside. It's partially filled with concrete for weight and has only traction motors. It takes its need for electricity from other locomotives like the 6918. This arrangement allows slow trains like this one to bring extra horsepower to bear while saving fuel. [D5100]

I'm not a "train guy", per se, but I admit that I'm fascinated by steam engines. I think it's because as a kid in the 1940s I lived near a railway roundhouse with a turntable for turning around the steam engines of that era.

A few years ago, I posted this image of the Oregon Coast Scenic Railroad's (OCSR) McCloud No. 25 "Prairie" type steam locomotive as it carried some folks north from Garibaldi, OR.

Last year, while I was visiting Shelton, WA I came upon this static display of a a geared Shay steam locomotive built by the Lima Locomotive Works. It's located in the center of town and honors the local logging industry.

This year, I visited Garibaldi once again and found that OCSR had rescued another piece of history. This one is a Heisler geared steam locomotive that was built in 1917. Craig Mountain Lumber Company No. 3 started life hauling logs in Winchester, ID. OCSR acquired it in 2016 and debuted it in 2022. The first image below includes what I presume is a father and young son. I hope the boy, who is perhaps seeing his first steam engine, will grow to appreciate the experience.

Way too hot outside to be hunting up trains, so I'll press the [Rewind] button and stop at about 1976. We're at Barrington, IL and Elgin, Joliet & Eastern's Train No. 5 is working hard with heavy loads of coiled steel. The EJ&E was owned by U.S. Steel at the time. Shot on good ol' Kodak Plus-X film (125 ASA) with my Nikkormat FTn. The locomotives were orange with silver trucks.

From 07/22/1976 at Hoboken, NJ, GE U-34CHs are ready to pull commuter trains to the suburbs. With 1976 being the U.S.A.'s Bi-Centennial, many of the nation's railroads painted select locomotives in celebratory red, white and blue. Conrail's 1776 was an example. Being a teen in college, I couldn't afford Kodachrome and captured the splendor of such things on Plus-X film. 🤷‍♂️

Great capture there Sandpatch. If you've shot enough B&W, as I'm sure you have one can tell the colors by the shades of grey. For me B&W adds an age to this photo. (y)
