I thought it might reception help if I placed the scanner up higher with the antenna more exposed. I'm not sure if it made a difference or not. I had a glass-mounted exterior scanner antenna mounted on my old '86 Toyota truck and it worked very well.

This $84 + $20 Shipping antenna seems to be today's epitome for reception, but it's cable-connected:

Hiked trackside in the woods today and found a tight curve that I thought might work for a photo. Trees blocked the composition I'd hoped for, but I thought this classic speed limit sign near the curve was pretty cool -- 50 MPH for passenger and 40 for freight.

The great train chase, Robinson to Crestline Ohio. I need a faster car, because I lost several times. It still was good fun chasing. :wink-new: This was on the old PRR Fort Wayne line now owned by the IORY. Sorry for some misinformation, that track is owned by the CFE. :shame:

That's one of the primary changes in train chasing it seems. 30 Years ago, you could stay ahead of most trains, but it's a hopeless endeavor on most mainlines today.

One of my shots posted here was possible only because NS was doing track maintenance and slow orders prevailed. I was able to spot a headlight in the distance, do a 180 Deg. turn, fly south five miles, park and run to my spot.

Thanks Chris, I am very interested! This gives me something to read tonight. :encouragement:

Well then, you are very welcome! I saw you mention Ft. Wayne, IN.........and since that's my city, I had to respond. I'll admit that I should read more about these straight line beauties. History was never my strong point LOL!!

Friday as I was driving in southern Ohio I hear a horn while passing through Wellston Ohio. I knew the Ohio South Central RR ran through there, but never dreamed I'd see one of their trains. Well truth be told not a train just an engine. It appears to be a 5 mph railroad, the tracks appear old & somewhat wobbly. Not sure what flavor of EMD Geep it is, but it did make me smile. :D

Edit: Google tells me this is a GP7. Guess the high hood went missing during a rebuild.

Nice captures! I'd have arrived two minutes later and seen the headlight receding in the distance .....

NJ Transit (aka NJ "Trainset" :)) arriving at Somerville, NJ on a very cold and rainy 03/31/17 on the former CNJ mainline.

Happily the original CNJ station has been renovated by a law firm with excellent attention to detail.

The downpour continued on the former LV main at Three Bridges, NJ. This is the Black River & Western's connection to the outside world. An overpowered NS local with a UP unit arrived to set out tank cars for the BR&W. I immediately toweled off my D5100 after each shoot this day and it seems no worse for the experience.
