All these nice caboose photos! Most of mine are on un-scanned 35mm slides, but I did find a few. Here's one from March 1986 at the former GM&O depot at Prattville, AL. NS is starting on its way from Prattville to the Port of Mobile with an entire unit train of boxcars loaded with linerboard originating at the Union Camp paper mill.

From this afternoon, CSX southbound at Elgin, SC. I messed around with the format and decided that a square matched the composition best. Man, those bright ditch lights can really mess up a meter reading can't they? I used Matrix Metring on this one so that the reading wouldn't be overwhelmed as it might be with Center Weighted or Spot.

When CSX installed PTC (Positive Train Control) signaling on the former SAL mainline, all sorts of new signal locations appeared such as this one I learned about yesterday and snapped this afternoon. This line sees only four through trains a day - Amtrak's Silver Star at night and a daytime freight in each direction, plus a local some afternoons. I'm guessing that PTC regulation required this "over-signaling" of a rather lightly used line.

Nice photo Sandpatch. That equipment looks so new. 2 freights a day & you caught one, great job!

Did you catch NOVA on PBS this week? All about trains.

Didn't they have dual gauge tracks in some places in the old days? I seem to remember reading that someplace or another, but I'm old & can't remember where. :witless:

You're right. Colorado had some dual standard gauge/3 Foot gauge lines (C&S and D&RGW) and the East Broad Top in PA had the same. The EBT actually swapped trucks on cars interchanged with the PRR and their yard had a lot of dual gauge track. They had a sling crane that lifted each car end and trucks would be rolled out. I can only imagine the scene, with brake rigging and air connections having to be somehow dealt with.
