i saw this guy by the tracks when i arrived in town, 2 hours later when i was leaving here was in the same spot shooting trains going thru ritzville.

I don't understand his use of a tripod. Well maybe he is shooting video.

found: About 3 miles of tanker cars in montana boonies.

station has been restored but sits empty. One end gets opened 1 hr b 4 passenger train arrives, which is in the middle of the nite.

Good point. Sometimes on rare occasion I find a rail composition with distracting elements on the periphery (like parked cars with shiny chrome, high tension power lines, a billboard, etc.) and if I have a tripod, I can perfectly set the scene and trigger the shutter as the train passes through. Without the tripod, I can't hold everything as I want. But, normally I shoot handheld.
