Post your Train shots!

Train photography kinda reminds me of fishing, sometimes you wait 2 minutes or 2 hours before you catch something. You also never really know what you're gonna catch. I think if I found the right spot I'd bring a lawn chair and a picnic lunch :)

That there is a Jordan Spreader, a very useful piece of equipment that leads a mighty rough life as Rick's photo shows. Not only can it plow, but it finds widespread use in "ditching", i.e. precisely profiling the sides of the right-of-way to allow for proper drainage. The wings on the sides can are extended and angled with powerful hydraulics to provide any sort of cut required. The wings do break sometimes, but a quick weld usually restores things back into service. The Jordan Spreader must be propelled by locomotives.

Shot the scots guardsman this afternoon, we were really lucky, less than a minute later a train went the other way, a few seconds difference could have completely killed our little expedition today! I think it came out ok though, lighting wasnt too clever so i switched to b/w and played about with it a little bit.

I don't think I would have liked this in color. Steam locomotives and B/W go together.

Spot on marilynne, the colour original is a good enough pic but it just doesnt look right, for me the best way to shoot anything from this period is better in black and white, be it military or industrial.

I think its all those old war films i used to watch as a kid have had an affect on me :)

cheers guys for the comments, much appreciated!

Still watch those B/W war films when they're on!

Me too. One of my top favorites is The Train, thoughtfully fimed in b&w even thought it was made in 1964. The director appreciated the artistic qualities of b&w and figured it would be the last big-budget motion picture to use it.

Come to think of it, The Longest Day (1962) was done in b&w as well.

Burt lancaster! Now you are talking, i love this film, you should try 'hell drivers' too. Its about lorry drivers, not trains but its got the gritty feel of industry in that period, its great to see all the old lorries in that film.
