Finally found some trains after a long drought. Train time at Lugoff, SC:

Blue Ridge Southern headed home across the French Broad River in Asheville, NC. I'll be back someday to catch this shot with the train headed the other way which will yield a better shot.

Sometimes the stars don't align. NS's Lehigh Valley "Heritage" locomotive rolled in and found a home deep in the engine terminal under overcast skies. Wanting to stay safe and to show respect for railroad property, I didn't trespass to get a better shot from the other side. I'm hoping that the locomotive sticks around through the weekend so that I can get a chance for a decent picture. This was shot at ISO 1100! Not a bad result considering.

Very cool - the exif doesn't show - it doesn't even say exif n/a?

How did you get that shot?

Thanks! I was just out with my 70-300 and not much else on a walk and had the idea when I came across the train crossing. No ND filter meant I had to have smallest aperture (f32!) and ISO80 to get 1/2s exposure. I fence was my tripod! The only tricky thing was the timing and with trains only passing every 10-20mins I was there for a while!

exif info shows for me - took a screenshot that will hopefully show it.

Fortune smiled this morning when my Norfolk Southern Lehigh Valley Railroad "Heritage" locomotive boomeranged back into town after working in Georgia. I can add these pictures to my burgeoning collection on Heritage units in trail (i.e. not leading the train), but I'm very happy to have seen it in good light. I was hemmed in by an embankment for these shots, but I did my best. That Cornell Red paint is a beautiful color. The Lehigh Valley Railroad operated between Newark, NJ and Buffalo, NY and is a major favorite of mine.

First rail shot with my Oly gear, HDR

Nice work Rick. I'm sure glad that you stuck around with us on Nikonites! My best friend in High School had an Olympus OM-1 and got great results with it. He was as crazy about aircraft as I am about trains. Back in the day, we'd pile old crates up against a fence at O'Hare Airport in Chicago so that he could stand on them and shoot international aircraft over the top of the fence as they lined up awaiting takeoff. Betcha can't do that today! :(

Oh cool! Needa, they appear to be Florida East Coast's "Heritage" locomotives, painted to replicate a historic paint scheme as their diesel units wore 60 years ago. Nice shot -- thank you.

My pleasure. Almost didn't happen was shooting reflections in a window when I heard them coming. Got to the pedestrian crossing in time but not soon enough to cross and get in position to catch them crossing the New River bridge from the sunny side.
