They were traveling down an unplowed section of track , packed snow lifted it off the rails and over the embankment it went !

Interesting story behind the photo! :) So just how DO they plow railroad tracks? Does anyone know?

For extreme conditions, the large western and Canadian roads maintain large rotary snowthrowers. The type of derailment that mustang photographed happens most often at highway grade crossings where the hard-packed snow becomes ice and fills in the flangeway. Railroads also maintain another piece of equipment called a "flanger" which serves to clear crossings.

Found some old b&w photos this morning which I scanned. Here's a C&NW locomotive as shot in November 1975 in suburban Chicago, IL.

While we are looking at wrecks, here's a crumpled C&NW caboose taken in July 1976 in Barrington, IL. I think the train was rear-ended by another train that overran a signal. I hope no one was injured

Here's a "dwarf" signal protecting the crossing of the C&NW and EJ&E at Barrington, IL. The interlocking tower (now razed) appears in the background. Taken December 1976.

Shot with the J3,

What's he J3? I love the shot -- I'm a big Susquehanna (New York, Susquehanna & Western) fan. I used to live in an apartment in northern NJ adjacent to abandoned NYS&W track and never dreamed that it would be restored to service carrying modern stack trains. Of course this happened a few years after I moved away. :frown-new:

Too, most locomotives used in areas that find snow are permanently equipped with small plows like you see on EJ&E 651 and 663. As long as trains run these small plows help keep the line clear.
