Went to the "Loops" between Asheville, NC and Old Fort, NC yesterday and found some nice action. Look to the lower right of the first shot and you can see where the train will appear minutes later as it eases its way safely down the Blue Ridge. Helper locomotives are on the rear.

Now on the lower track, the train continues to roll east with helpers trailing to provide braking assist.

Also grabbed a shot of the helpers at rest at Old Fort while waiting for a westbound freight.

Here's the westbound past the depot and then exiting the Loops near Ridgecrest, NC about a half hour later. The last shot was made with my 200mm. This is one of those rare moments when I wish I'd have bought the 300mm, but it turned out okay. I've always wanted this shot and it's getting harder to get each year as the foliage grows in.

i like the third shot. Is that ice hanging of the sides of the cut? What is the distance (track wise) between the upper and lower track bed.

Thank you. Yes, it's ice. It was cold up there, but clear and just a perfect day. The track distance is about a mile between the upper and lower tracks. Between Old Fort and Asheville the railroad runs 30 miles to cover a straight line as-the-crow-flies distance of 21 Miles! In the railroad business, even a 1.5% grade is considerable. I'm not exactly sure what the ruling grade is on this line, but I think it exceeds 2%.
