A chilly day in 1976 at Barrington, IL finds Elgin, Joliet & Eastern train No. 6 on the move. The EJ&E is owned today by Canadian National. [Nikkormat FTn, Plus X film]

Started off the New Year by finding NS 8114 in the hole with a rock train at Simpson, SC this morning. This is one of Norfolk Southern's Heritage Locomotives, painted in original Norfolk Southern livery. There was once a Norfolk Southern before today's Norfolk Southern, with the name dating from 1883. It was purchased by the Southern Railway in 1974.

This the first interesting thing I've seen on the railroad in months. Nice to start 01/01/2022 on the right foot.

Caught new CSX train F784 at the south end of the siding in Camden, SC today. It was a beautiful day to be out.

This train restores a daily manifest through train to this line, eliminated several years ago through Precision Scheduled Railroading changes. Glad to have it back! :)

Yay - after ten years I finally caught up with Norfolk Southern's Nickel Plate heritage unit today. This is a northbound train, so the sun is always in an awful spot for photography, but I know of a short segment on the line that runs east/west and it affords nice light.

The Nickel Plate Road ran from Buffalo to Chicago and St. Louis. It was built in the 1880s to very high standards, leading a newspaper Editor to write that the railroad was a double tracked, nickel plated road. He coined a nickname that stuck.

As I waited for the Nickel Plate train to arrive, I found a Federal Railroad Administration inspection car set out on the mainline and within minutes, power arrived to move it onto the siding and clear up.

I've ridden in a similar car once and the view is unmatched.

Today's grab shot, NS Train 192 arriving at Columbia, SC from Macon, GA. The three units were working hard as they passed by at slow speed and sounded great.

Found this old EMD SW-900 switcher, built in 1956 or 1957, working at a steel mill. It was originally owned by Oklahoma's Sand Springs Rwy.. I had to stand around for a while on a highway bridge until it broke cover. The things we do for a train photo .....

Thank you. The steel mill runs a number of old units, but they don't ever seem to last long. My suspicion is that they buy 'em cheap, run them until they quit and then cut them up. I'm pretty sure this one still had its EMD 567 intact, as it sounded so sweet when it loaded up, just like the Geeps and Fs we remember when we were young.

I'd actually sought an NS train that afternoon and missed it by 30 seconds ( :( ). I wanted to come home with something, so made a short trip by the CSX yard and happened to see this switcher dragging scrap metal cars back to the mill. Railfanning serendipity at its best.

Today's NS 238 at Columbia, SC. This is a daily train that operates from Atlanta, GA to Charleston, SC. The two trailing units are switchers bound for duty at NS's yard in Charleston. I'm not usually a wide-angle kind of guy, but gave it a try here.

Nice catch Sandpatch. I'm not much for using a wide angle either, but as you have shown it works very well here. Man those old EMD locomotives look so little in comparison to those wide cab GEVO's. We are in the age of monster locomotives.

Found CSX F764 yesterday working an industry. Sometimes I blunder into a decent shot. I like the way the gateposts frame the picture and the headlight reflection in the puddle is a bonus. I guess that the crew had the front door open to catch the breeze.

Finally caught up with Norfolk Southern's Heritage Unit honoring the Jersey Central, though not in a good spot for photography. Nonetheless, I wanted to capture an image of some sort. The Jersey Central's tangerine and blue paint was born of optimism at the close of WW-II and many of their road units were painted in this attractive scheme, though by the mid-1950s, the Jersey Central's finances began to slide and the tangerine and blue was replaced with a frugal Deep Sea Green.

I tried to catch up with this locomotive when it departed, but it was not leading the train and it was raining. Maybe next time ......
