It was a bit like that. I had my 55mm macro on at one point and was able to take shots from less than 2 meters, unfortunately I'd switched back to my 70-300mm when one came up to me to check out my camera, it couldn't have been much more than 18 inches away. I see reds at work fairly often but have never experienced anything like that before, unless you count grey squirrels in a park.
