Just come out of hibernation. I work outside in the cold so I don't like spending my free time outside.

First Zebra of the season. "Skelping a backside" as we would say in Scotland . :D

I came across this beautiful little female Marpissa muscosa while working on a boat this afternoon. I coaxed her onto my hand and went off to get my camera. She ran up my arm and settled down on my collar. It was only when I re'turned to the boat that she jumped off. This is her sitting on my finger.

My first ever jumping spiders shots. The little guy/gal didn't want to stay still and as they do, jumped off out of sight before I could get many shots. As a first attempt though I'm happy with these. If I find any more I'll try out the extension tubes so I don't have to crop so much.

Anyone who is interested in jumping spiders must have wondered at sometime why male Zebra spiders (Salticus scenicus) have such ridiculously long chelicerae -jaws). I zoomed in on this photo and discovered why. Their fangs are extremely impressive though they barely exceed 1mm in a fully grown adult.

Chicken and egg time - what came first: long chelicerae or long fangs? :D
