I have made some from 550 parachute cord for my GPS and other things. You might think about doing something like that. Leather or 550 cord.

In the past I made leather dog leashes from normal belts. You simply cut them into strips and braid them (or whatever you fancy). It's often stronger (and looks better) than what is for sale out there.

Thinking about it, I might make a neck strap like that. The flashy cheap crap Nikon included isn't up to my standards.

I am thinking through a design for a camera strap. I still haven't completely come up with exactly how I want to do it, but I think whatever I come up with will be better than I have (original NIkon strap) Ha!

Interesting thread. I was reading it and realized that my original Nikon 1" wide soft strap is the most comfortable way to carry my heavy camera. I tried the original round woven one from my old Nikon "F" and it just doesn't do it.
I have a spare memory card attached on one side and the little remote pushbutton on the other in it's case. The flat cord keeps both sitting right.

Wanted to follow up. I ended up with Lance Camera Straps - Made in the USA

48" black strap for the x-700
red wrist strap to use for the others.

Great products!

Saw a friend had a Gordy's sling type strap, now looking at a brown one about 52" long.... N.A.S......

What' the name of the braid pattern that you used?

Looking at the neck strap, from the snap hook, Snake knot, the round bead type knot is a Diamond knot or lanyard knot (See making ranger beads), the brown and green strands from the snake knot are tied to the other using a slip knot so the length can be adjusted. Then between the two slip knots a Cobra weave is braided over the two strands for a larger neck pad. The two strands can slip inside the Cobra weave when adjusting the length using the slip knots.

Hope this helps
