I had the iso low and was getting shake (way over 1000mm effective focal length). It was a 3 mile hike so I left the 180mm f/2.8 in the car. Had I brought it the owl and redtail pics would have been perfect. The harrier was about 1000 yards off and I was shooting handheld so they are bad.

I doubt at 1000 yards it was ever even possible to get a clear shot , regardless of method and means , atmospheric distortion etc. 800mm is a lot of lens too.

Watch this space. Me and a friend installed a peregrine nest box in Aurora, IL on a 22 story bldg. This shot is from the street and there is no crop (my lens is bigger than yours). Unfortunately all that is visible is a front perch.

Okay all you raptor/bird gurus, what type of hawk is this? The Merlin app was all over the place - rock pigeon, coot, juv eagle, red shouldered, etc...

Checked Merlin app bird list, that is not one of the 400 birds on the list.

Thanks Kevin and wev. When I looked in my Sibley Bird book, that one did match the flying away shot, but the colors looked wrong from the other drawings, so I ruled that out. Also, according to Sibley, they're not found in my area.

It was eating something small when we first spotted it and I did notice two empty apple snail shells on the sidewalk under it, but we see empty apple snail shells all the time.
