Kodiak - I really appreciate how you try to encourage other photographers to participate, learn, and have fun with this craft as a hobby or as a means to earn money.

I am not the moderator for this thread but I'm sure one of the moderators can change the title and/or include specific details / requirements in the beginning of the thread so that only solo portrait of people or maybe even a group / family portraits are allowed. Who can that be and how can this be fixed?

A separate thread of people shots which includes snapshots, sports, photo journalism, concert, etc with their favorite portrait lens may also spark some interest. Just my suggestion. COOL!

@Kodiak Please do NOT start threads in the photo evaluation section UNLESS you are posting a photo for critique or feedback per the rules. This thread has been moved to where it belongs, "Learning Photography/Portraits" where you are free to provide parameters for your "portraits."

@all members If you do not like the parameters set up by a poster, you have the liberty of starting your own thread in this section.

"A portrait is a painting, photograph, sculpture, or other artistic representation of a person, in which the face and its expression is predominant. The intent is to display the likeness, personality, and even the mood of the person. For this reason, in photography a portrait is generally not a snapshot, but a composed image of a person in a still position. A portrait often shows a person looking directly at the painter or photographer, in order to most successfully engage the subject with the viewer."

Some of the shots you said were not portraits are indeed portraits and some are snapshots. You may want to specify Studio Portraits only if that is what you are after. But in your portrait of your son it is not a studio portrait either. I do agree that it is a portrait in the fact that you shot it as a posed subject even if the background is a bit busy as to take away from the center of interest. I personally like portraits done outdoors or even indoors with an interesting background as long as it adds to mood or interest to the main subject.

Well I'm confused the shot of my grandson is a snapshot not portrait, cause it was done outdoors at his ball game?

I would certainly classify your photo as a portrait (environmental)

It's difficult to determine what is and what isn't when the OP, who apparently has different definitions, doesn't let the audience know what constitutes a "snapshot". Don gave a possible definition.

So much about photography has and is changing, still. In the days of film, "portrait" meant "studio portrait." Portrait today is very different.

To avoid further confusion and other members being insulted by having their well thought out captures referred to as "snapshots," I'm closing the thread. OP can start another thread in which he clearly specifies what he classifies as a snapshot as opposed to a portrait, and gives a clear indication of what is or is NOT allowed.
