My son took this on our way to the Detroit Autorama recently. Shot with a D40 / 18-55mm.
Uncropped - his framing wasn't too bad
LR: lens correction, little HDR-ish preset and bumped the Vibrance a little.

Pat....is that shot on River Street in Savannah? Or Riverfront? WHatever you call it? It looks a little like it. Wished we could have driven down for the St. Patty's Day celebration. I'm sure it was a crazy weekend!

Volunteered to pretend to be a photographer at a fun photo shoot at a Children's Centre 10th Anniversary Party.
The Theme was "I love the 80's" - go figure, many of the parents with kids at the Centre would have been born in the 80's.
Anyone recognize my jersey?
My lovely assistant, the 'volun-told' Mrs. is up against the backdrop they provided for these psychedelic pictures.
Wigs, hats, wild sun glasses, air guitars (actually blow up toys) and other props were provided and the kids and parents had a lot of fun.
I did Learn a few things.
One: Don't ASSuME - grabbed the box in which I thought I had put my photo-umbrella (wanted to really look the part) - It had the flash stand but not the umbrella. LOOK don't assume you put your gear back in the box where you are supposed to put it. I did have a Gary Fong Whale Tale to mount on the flash on the stand and put my other one on a mini tripod on the floor and bounced the light back onto the subjects using a gold reflector.
Two: An old 28-80m F 3.5- 5/6 D may not have been the best choice for this photo shoot. Wanted a wide zoom and this one had the best range. My wife was shooting with the D5100 and the 35mm prime - her pictures were much sharper than mine, and mine were on a tripod with two remote flashes and the on camera one (muffled with that pop on diffuser). Nobody complained and lots raved about the images but I'm my own critic when I pixel peeped and saw just how softly focused the images tended to be. This will just feed my need to buy another lens - looking at something in the 24 to something zoom with fast aperture (prefer 2.8 but maybe a 3.5 if the quality and price is right) - any recommendations?
Three: When shooting groups, especially families, take lots of shots, chances of everyone smiling and looking in the right directions with eyes open all together in the same shot are slim. In a few cases my best will be the one where only one of the kids is looking away or maybe the one where Dad's eyes are closed. These were younger children and boy getting them all to look at you and not give that cheesiest "cheese" smile is a skill I have yet to perfect. After this shoot I think i'd rather volunteer to take senior citizen portraits during Seniors Week.
Sorry privacy rules at the children's centre prevents me from sharing any of the child photo's taken.
BUT still It was a Blast from the Past and I did enjoy myself.
All for fun and since no money will change hands no body can complain (well they can but I don't have to listen).

I'm mystified by how some photographers leave their lens hoods on backwards. Does it help gather more light that way?
I must admit to the same thoughts.i dont think there is anything spoilt by using the right one so it must be a win win situation.
