We don't get many butterflies in our yard because we don't have the types of flowers that attract them. So when this one showed up, I was really surprised. It landed on the rear door of my SUV. The mailman happened to stop and leave mail so I went inside and got him a bottle of water. When I came out, the butterfly was still there. Initially it kept its wings folded. I lightly tapped the wings, and the butterfly flapped them a few times before leaving them opened. So I grabbed my cell phone and took this:

I went inside, got lunch for my mother, and pared an apple for me. About 45 minutes passed before I went outside to leave the peels for the bunny. The butterfly immediately flew right in front of me and landed on the window's shutter. Now really...what were the odds that it would stay put long enough for me to find my macro lens and mount it on my camera? I haven't used the lens in a while. When I went back outside, it was STILL there! :welcoming: Whee!!!!!!!!! I didn't dare risk hunting for something to stand on so this was it. After I took a few shots, it flew off as fast as a speeding fly...and I'm not kidding! :eyetwitch: It was literally gone in an instant--I've NEVER seen a butterfly zip away like a really fast fly like this one did. It was way too eerie, and definitely not natural. By the way, I was told this is a Buckeye Butterfly.

Since getting the D500 and both the 105 f2.8 macro as well as the amazing 300mm f4 PF lens, I have started to shoot some images of butterflies / dragonflies and other flying insects etc. I am amazed at the IQ I am getting from the D500 and both of these lenses and the challenges of capturing these timourous beasties is all new.

These are some of my recent exploits with the new kit.
