Here is my effort with my D800 (Which I no longer have) and a 105mm 2.8 micro...WEV. and WORNISH...How in the world do you get so close to insects?

Exactly, you have to be sneaky and approach them slowly.
The butterflies this year seem very skittish.

I think the one I posted was just enjoying the Sun after a dull day.

This is the sort of photo where you should take several shots, each focused on a different part of the insect and then focus stack them in Photoshop or some other programme. The noise/blur is caused by the extremely small depth of field rather that the 800 ISO setting. Great to see you trying out head-on shots which are more difficult than side or down-looking shots.
