My latest purchase? An investment in myself. This week I enrolled in the New York Institute of Photography's Complete Course in Professional Photography. Figured it's time to get some structured instruction to this hobby of mine. :)

When I went out on the Playhouse Square shoot, I took my D800 with the 24/1.4. I didn't know if tripods were allowed, and I really didn't want to lug a tripod around with my "lightweight" D800 setup. So... I took my monopod. It was (notice past tense) a Targus from Walmart. The catches that held the extensions in place had worn and any downward pressure on the monopod forced it to compact. Really cheesy. I made due, but decided I needed a new monopod. I checked out various Manfrottos on line. Nothing really exciting unless I wanted to sell a leg to buy one.

Today, I stopped by my local camera shop and found exactly what I was looking for. All metal; no plastic, and extends to 63" It's a Pro Master Model 6785. The catches are metal and fully adjustable for tension and a wrench is included. I paid $59, but they can be had on line for $49. If heavy duty is what you're looking for, this is a good one to research.

Found a tripod at a local pawn shop. Hakuba s4500. For $10 it'll work for now. Ordered an ir remote, wrist strap and a lock plate for the tripod from B&H.

Well sort of a new purchase

My 3T Seagate Hard-drive died.
I ordered another one.
THEN I looked into the warranty - and it appeared I might get it covered.
They have lots of rules about shipping in original packaging - which I didn't have but packed it up well and sent it off with the RMA documents I got on line.
The replacement unit arrived today.

Now I have Two 3T internal hard drives, one 2T internal hard drive, two SSD's (one hosts my Windows 8.1 OS the other my Windows 7 OS - a dual boot system). I have one Lacie 3T external in a case, a smaller 2T portable hard-drive and an old 300GB portable hard drive. (I also have another 2T small portable drive for my laptop). So 3+3+2+3+2+.3= 13.3 Terabytes of storage for my main computer not counting the SSD's.

Time to do some serious reconfiguration.

When I upgrade to Windows 10 I'll being dropping the Windows 7 option and just go for one OS. Might put one of the SSD's into the laptop - there is room for a second drive in the laptop and I like my OS and key programs on an SSD. Again after Windows 10 upgrade.

I'm thinking the two internal 3T's can be mirrored for redundancy and this will be my main data drive. The external 3T will back up the internals and be stored off site.

That leaves me two 2T small externals - one is for the laptop the other?

I think I'm good for at least another few months of photographic images .... :)

Since I went to my D610 and started shooting RAW my storage needs have grown exponentially. I need to be more selective about what I save, and I have started learning to do this better.

Data / Image management is not the most interesting part of this hobby but you don't want to fail at that task.

Remote wired shutter with bulb feature. I plan on taking night sky shots while in Maine. Should be clear enough where we are going.

Been wanting to be able to start swapping film in my RB67, so I've been hunting down additional 120 films backs. The second one showed up Thursday.

My long-term goal is to have four total.... one for b&w N:0, one for N-2 and a third for N+2. And the fourth for color film should I ever take leave of my senses.

My B&H order arrived today! Cheapie Protec wrist strap, quick release mount for tripod, and the Nikon ML-L3 ir remote. Remote works flawlessly out of the box. Strap is nice and snug. Great experience and fast shipping with B&H. Will definitely keep them in mind for stuff.
