I bookmarked that one Dave, I like it, pretty much what I have been looking. Just have to wait a bit to refill my NAS jar.

I considered this one and I'm sure it would work great if you're an average sized person but being 6'5", I needed something with a higher minimum height. And because I almost never extend the center post (unless I was indoors), bending over constantly to look through the viewfinder was destroying my back. The Giottos, however, seem to be one of the few manufacturers that built them for taller people. This particular tripod has a minimum height of 64 in w/o the center column in place. Add to that a ball head and center column and you have a tripod that doesn't not destroy my back.

You lose a good deal of stability with every inch the column is extended. If you're indoors and there's no air currents you'll be fine but if there's any kind of breeze, you'll want the tripod set at it's more stable positions and that is when the center post is at its lowest point. When you're doing lots of long exposure shots, that extra stability can really make a difference. That's why I like these taller tripods, so much easier on your back (or at least on my back, that is :) )

If you decide you need more reach than the 18-55mm and you start looking at the 55-200mm because that's the lens that comes in the two lens kit I suggest you go for the extra 100mm and get something like the 70-300 or 55-300. I picked up the 55-200 separately for really cheap but I wish I had the extra reach for wildlife pics.

Yes I noticed that myself! Lol It doesn't like you to manually focus on my AF-D 105mm micro lens at all! Lol But I love how compact you can make it for storage! Maybe I can figure out a way to make it work better somehow? Or have you already tried that route?
