As I was pondering over whether to spend my savings for one of the new Zeiss lenses, I got a little inquisitive about it with good Nikonite friend @TedG954. I asked him which lens he would get and I had almost forgotten what beautiful images he took with his Sony Zeiss 55mm / 1.8. I got to thinking I was overlooking the most spectacular lens released so far by Sony/Zeiss for the Sony A7 lineup. I decided to pony up for the Zeiss 55/1.8. It should be here shortly. Here's a mug shot of it.

DP Review:

The scale of Sony's achievement here becomes clear when comparing the FE 55mm F1.8 directly to the Zeiss Otus 55mm F1.4, which lays a strong claim to being the best lens for which we have test data. The Otus still just about comes out on top - it measures as slightly sharper wide open - but it's unlikely any difference will be particularly visible in real-world photography. The Otus also just about wins out on chromatic aberration and distortion, but overall the Sony can certainly wear its Zeiss badge with pride. The Zeiss also beats Nikon's latest, and even-more-pricey AF-S Nikkor 58mm f/1.4G for sharpness in these tests - it really is very good indeed.

From the lab test results, the Sony FE 55mm F1.8 ZA is quite simply one of the sharpest lenses we've seen. It's clearly been designed with the demands of modern high resolution sensors in mind, and is easily a match for the currently class-leading resolution of the Alpha 7R. It's impossible to ignore its price, but in this case, there's a pretty good argument that you get what you pay for.

DXOmark published the full Zeiss 55mm f/1.8 FE lens test and the results are extraordinary! It’s the best autofocus lens ever tested at DxO and the second best lens ever tested at DxOmark after the manual focusing and 4 times more expensive $3999 Zeiss Otus.

Thanks Ted...for giving sage advice, and not really pushing too hard for me to get the 55 right now. You left it up to me, and I appreciate that. That being said, you certainly did not let me forget about the 55. I'm sure I won't be sorry. The lens should be here Monday afternoon. I can't wait. It's like a crown jewel for my camera bag. I figure it'll stay on my camera most of the time. Thanks again for the articles you posted, Ted, and patience!

If I helped, I'm glad I had the opportunity.

After much back and forth on which lens to get, I think I tired my dear wife out with lens chatter and she bought me the Tamron 24-70 F 2.8 VC today at the McBains Camera show in Edmonton. "Happy Early Birthday, Anniversary and Christmas" she says to me. She is a keeper

We really lucked out and later that day we stumbled upon the Edmonton Parrot Show and I had a chance to try out my new lens with some very colourful subjects up close and personal. Will post a few in "post your birds" once I finish processing the shots.

Bought the Lee Field Pouch at a camera show yesterday. It's basically an all in one holder for your filters that comes with a couple of handy straps. You can wear it over your shoulder or attach it to your belt, or best of all attach it to your tripod.
Easy access to your filters. No more opening and closing the bag and opening individual pouches to get filters out.
