How do you manage to get to f/1?
Btw, I notice you got the TC2X. How does it perform quality wise? I'm thinking about getting one for macro but am wondering if it is worth it.
Sorry for that the exif is all messed up since the lens I used, a Konica Hexanon 52mm f1.8 does not communicate with the body. One of the pictures was taken at f4 (the pink flower). Then I should actually correct this since the Fotodiox adaptor used has a TC1.4 effect, so puts the aperture 1 stop up, but also changes the focal length so not great difference on DOF.
It depends on the lenses you have, without modification there is a limit to the lenses you can use with the TC2x.
I use it excursively on the 70-200mm (only compatible lens I have) and with the D7000 I quite love it. On the D70s I need to go full manual, which is acceptable most of the time. I had my best picture of a butterfly (I do not release it yet) with the TC2 + 200mm at quite a distance from the animal using AF. It has actually become my favorite macro set up (even if not 1:1).
On the other hand I decided (waiting for money flow) to get a Canon 500D Close Up lens (Nikon is hard to find):
- with 200mm this gives more effect then extension tubes
- where the TC makes you loose light (2 stops), the Close Up lens does not.
- combining them Close up + TC allows for quite extreme macro
- the TC does have a negative effect on IQ as well, but honestly at short focus distance I can not see it. But be careful with less rated lenses, you will see their faults better.
Completely strange idea, I do consider a Sony A7r and adapter with huge post processing cropping for macro (less risk and more light without adding glass layers or distance), you have the detail and you will probably work manual + it is a lot cheaper then the superior D810.
Conclusion: I do like the TC 2x, I use it quite a lot. However my experience with the Kenko 1.4 makes me wonder how much less the Kenko 2x would perform for less then half the price of the Nikon (there are many bad Kenko version out there though).
Example: TC-20E III + 70-200 (even if here I did not want a very close effect, I had the combination on the camera)
Thanks for the info. I was thinking about getting the AF-S 105mm as an additional macro but equipped for extreme. With a TC2x I'd be at 2:1 at the same working distance and could still put a close-up in front.
Closing down wouldn't be much of a problem since at such magnification that's the only option anyways.
