Turk's Cap (Malvaviscus arboreus) -- the flowers brew up a delicious tea that tastes like pink lemonade. The plant is a primary food source for the Turk's-cap White-Skipper butterfly

A light touch of contrast and saturation on iPhoto, but nothing else.

35mm, f/1.8, 1/4000, ISO 800

I'm not much for giving advice without having been asked for it but since your listed yourself as a newbie I would like to make a few suggestions. First lower the ISO much lower to maybe ISO 100. Next use a little smaller F-stop such as maybe F 3.2 to give you just a little more depth of field. Doing these things will also automatically lower the shutter speed. The closer you are to your subject the less depth of field you will have and also the larger F-stop or smaller the number of your f-stop is will reduce your depth of field also. I understand that you probably wanted the background out of focus, and I agree, but I think your photo might have benefited by having a little more of the image in focus. Hope this will give you some ideas, and keep up the good work.

Thanks Grandpaw, all comments and advice welcome. Agree with your point on f/ stops, and was part of my self-learning. But always helpful to hear the same for others. ISO was a genuine error - as I've posted elsewhere recently, I need to try and remember to reset the ISO after each session - using and A setting does not flash an automatic reminder......and D3200 does not allow Auto ISO on this setting.

I'm in Bali at the moment and the WiFi is flaky and S.L.O.W at best, but I'll give it a try. Some pics from our villa. 1. Weaving for the rice festivals on at the moment all over Bali. Every house has their own. 2. What we call Crab Claw. A type of Heliconia I think. 3. Another Heliconia, that seem to grow wild! 4. I'm not sure of this but it's a cactus(?) of some sort. Cheers, Brad :).
