Post Your D500 Shots

Back to macros shooting with a tele: I just took this shot of a small fly (~1/3" or 8mm long) with my D500 + 300mm F4 PF. Made small adjustments in LR, like cropping and a slight increase in clarity, but no sharpening.

This owl took the mouse from the long grass only 8 feet from where I was standing. It dived dtraight towards me and took me completely by surprise as you can see from the second shot. With the exception of a D5 I don't believe any other camera could have grabbed the eye focus so quickly.

Tough when you have a Great Grey in your back yard

Are the fires easing up out there Ivan??

Unfortunatly, NO. We did have some rain but nowhere near enough. The temperatures have dropped though, with daily highs now in the low 20's instead of the low 40's so that helps. Our "local"wildfire is now over 800 square miles in extent and still not under control. Fingers, and everything else, are firmly crossed.

The Great Grey is a resident and nests on the neighboring property. We also have a resident Barred Owl.

I really hope you guys get some rain soon

These are some of my first macro / nature images with the D500 + 300mm f4 PF.

This lens never ceases to amaze me and I am wondering if there is anything it can't do.

I picked up the TC-14E 111 version when I got the 300mm PF, yes it is expensive but having tried it for some of the car racing images there is no noticeable loss of AF performance, image quality and on the D500 I now have a small light 630mm equivalent lens that is very easy to carry and hand hold yet all I lose is 1 x "f"stop so a small price to pay for a tiny powerful super sharp high performance lens that is small enough to always have with you - just in case.

MoabMan, great shot. That's the non-PF version of the lens you got, right? If so, imagine the kind of macros you'd be getting with the PF version, which focuses down to 4.6 feet instead of the 8 feet of the non-PF lens. :)

[h=1]The 300mm f/4 ED-IF AF-S focuses to 5 feet. The older yet version, the AF, is the one that focuses to 8 feet.

I use my AF-S with a 1.4x teleconverter all the time for things like bees, butterflies, etc. :)

Taking a long weekend with the Mrs and decided to just bring the D500 to remind me that it's a great camera - period - not just a great sports and wildlife camera.

I think my 300mm f/4 is the same model as Woody's. It's about the same size and weight as my 70-200mm f/2.8 so it has some heft to it. It's a spectacular lens though! ;)
