Post Your D500 Shots

Before the rains came yesterday I was standing on the deck when something came flying fast and directly overhead from my right. This Cooper's Hawk banked hard and landed in a tree limb on the corner of the property and stayed just long enough for me to pick up the camera and squeeze off 5 or 6 shots before it took off after what it had spotted on the first pass.

The thing about nature photography is to never let opportunity pass you by. When the moment arrives, if you have to go inside to get your camera then you might as well not have one.

Auto ISO I'm thinking.

I've basically learned that with modern sensors you can feel like a pro by shooting in Manual all the time, while in reality you've simply learned how to set your camera so you're essentially fooling yourself and are in actuality in a different form of Auto mode. I set the shutter and aperture and tell the camera to pick the ISO that works for the exposure (Auto ISO). As long as it promises not to go past my max I just shoot and don't think twice. I barely ever think about ISO on anything outside of studio-type stuff.

I've used Auto ISO a few times but never noticed that it offers other ISO options that aren't available in 1/3 stop increments. I will look for more info on this. I try to stay in all manual, at least for the first shot of the day, because otherwise my D750 shutter fails. I had an open case with Nikon, but the guy said he'd review the files I submitted and get back to me. That never happened so I reopened the case last week. Still haven't received any response. Thanks for the info. I need to look more into the stops Auto ISO offers.

I honestly wouldn't worry about what specific ISO numbers it uses. The way I look at it using Auto ISO with Manual mode is essentially being able to shoot in Shutter and Aperture Priority simultaneously, and if it can alter ISO in some form of nearly seamless increments then you've essentially got even more accuracy with the exposure. The only number I worry about is the Max setting and how I set the shutter speed compensation when I'm using Aperture priority.

Remember what I said yesterday about having the camera with you? I was sitting on the deck with the Mrs. when she heard "this funny sounding Blue Jay" on the other end of the deck. Turned out it was a funny looking Blue Jay as well. We've had a Green Heron once in the trees in the back of the yard, but never on our deck. It took all my best stealth to get to somewhere I had a clear shot.

Been watching these guys for years and I can honestly say that I've never seen them land on a flower, particularly one they just fed on. I was pleading, "Please, please, please don't move!!", as I reached for the camera.

An unintended experiment.
Grabbed the D500 and began shooting before checking the ISO - it was at 3200 - but I didn't need 3200 - so dropped it to 800
Expected to see big difference when processing the images.
Not much difference eh? You tell me.
