This thread got me thinking about a camera I bought 20 years ago, a Canon PowerShot SD600 Elph. It was the second digital camera I ever owned, replacing a Casio QV-3000EX (a veritable brick by comparison). It was the only camera I used for about 8 years. I especially loved the small size because it didn't take up any real space when traveling but it took decent pictures. For example,
Recently, I stumbled upon some software that can enhance the capabilities of the SD600. It's called the Canon Hack Development Kit (CHDK). The website states that "CHDK is a unique software application developed by enthusiasts that enables extra features for ported Canon™ "Point&Shoot" cameras. CHDK enhances the capabilities of your camera in a non-destructive, non-permanent way." A couple of things it can add that caught my attention are an on screen battery status indicator and the ability to capture RAW files.
CHDK may be well known to Canon shooters but it was a surprise for me. Currently, I've loaded it on my SD600 (it actually resides on the SD card) and I'm wading through the extensive on line manual. Once I figure out which features I want to implement, I'll post some shots and some comments on how well the software does (or doesn't) work for me.
