I will often do a quick conversion in Aperture just to see how well a photo will convert. For me, it is great contrast between light and dark with sharp blacks and an unmuddy look. Many photos just don't make the grade. In many ways I find black and white to be much more critical to achieve than colour.

What makes you converting a picture into B&W instead of letting in its original colour?
Color can sometimes be, and often is, a powerful distraction.

Subjects with commanding shapes, or distinctive tones, often convert well to black and white in my opinion. I also like to see strong contrast; really white whites and really black blacks. A whole frame of middle greys is just... Bleh.

More images from the film lab (aka, the darkroom):

Having nothing else to do Sunday, I struck out early to try out a couple lenses I received Saturday for the Shen Hao 4x5.... a Camulet 210mm f/5.6 and a Nikkor 90mm f/8.

Here's what I've processed so far:

Never did put the 90 to use... mostly used the 210mm!

Downtown St. Paul, MN taken from the steps of the St. Paul Cathedral. This is a composite. I actually took the picture of the sky at my job in Minneapolis. Shot with a Nikon D7100 and Sigma 35mm f1.4.
