I'm only responding because you mentioned wanting to learn. Take a look at the EXIF data in the series of Great Blue Heron images. The aperture and shutter speed are constant, but the ISO value changes. It would be almost impossible to change the ISO value manually that quickly with a succession of images.
Plus something to keep in mind - when in Shutter Priority, the aperture is the value that changes to maintain exposure. In all of these, the aperture and shutter speed don't change. So it seems as though he's using Manual Mode with Auto ISO, but bluzman can tell you his settings for sure.
With the last image of yours in this thread, look at your shutter speed (well...the forum sometimes botches the way it is displayed). It appears to be 1/125". That is too slow for moving birds. Increase your shutter speed to 1/2000" and that should help keep moving birds in focus. In bluzman's images, his shutter speed is even faster at 1/3200". Hope that helps a little until you hear from bluzman.

Thanks, Cindy. Think I was a little quick to ask the auto iso question for just looking at the Exif of the last two images from the series and they are the same 500 -- my fault. As you mentioned auto iso could most likely be used. Your analysis toward M mode with constant speed and aperture setting sounds well creditable. I'm embarrassed by my failure and uncarefulness in analyzing images with Exif before asking questions. Thank you for pointing out and reminding me nonetheless and I'll keep learning.
Please don't be embarrassed. This forum is to help with learning. Besides, we all started somewhere. There is definitely a learning curve to both taking photos as well as editing them. The good thing is your knowledge will expand as long as you continue to search for the why's and why not's.

For BIFs, I have been using Shutter Priority with speeds between 1/2500 and 1/3200 seconds and Auto ISO. I go that route rather than full Manual mode because I'm mainly concerned that my shutter speed is fast enough to capture the motion clearly. In S Mode and fully zoomed at 250mm with the 50-250mm f/4.5-6.3 kit lens on the Z50, the aperture stays constant at f/6.3 and the ISO value varies. A similar situation occurs in the image of the cormorant using the D750 when fully zoomed to 300mm with the 70-300mm f/4.5-5.6 lens.
As for performance of the D750 vs the Z50, I'd say that the Z50 isn't quite up to my D750 when it comes to BIFs. That may have more to do with me than my equipment. With that in mind, I'm working on my developing my skills to get the best out of all of my cameras. TRANSLATION: I try to shoot as much and as often as I can with every camera that I own.
For now, though, my D7500 is my current "go to" camera for BIF shooting.

Surprising that you used S mode which I was guessing at the moment I asked, but Cindy opined differently. I use S mode too when shooting moving subject. My question about D750 vs Z50 stems from wanting to see whether and how the mirrorless (Z) can out-perform D by real usage of both cameras. But maybe D750 and Z50 are not at the same level to compare (maybe D750 vs Z6?). AW, thank you for sharing your photographing experience.
