scott, what do you think the pros and cons are of you 80-400mm vr? I can not afford the new one and was thinking of getting a used one. Thanks.

Well it takes some getting used to, and you need to be able to read the focus. Its slow i will give you that but you can get some great shots from it. I would love the new one if I didn't just fork out 7K on my car. So this will have to do and I find it acceptable, the minimum focus distance is not good for dragon flies etc that are near your feet. But in saying that I have got some decent shots. The sweet spot IS f/7.1 so that is all I really shoot at with it. It does make a difference. But I have shot everything from standing animals miles off to ones within 8ft its a versatile lens but I understand coupling a f/2.8 200 or 300 would be better with a TC. But I have no experience with those. If you look at my shots with the 80-400 they arent bad 'if' you have good light but still doable with poor light with higher ISO the birds in flight were around 800-2000 ISO from memory.
