How much does that thing weigh? (The Nikkor 200-600 f/5.6) :loyal: Also noticed the SS at 1/640th for BIF? Are you afraid to push the ISO on that new D500?:p

I have been watching for these Pelicans to arrive at this location for several weeks because it provides excellent access. Today was the first time I had seen them, a single one preening. I fired off several shots at my normal BIF shutter speed 1/1250 for the record, then cranked it down to 1/640 to reduce the ISO. THAT'S when he decided to take off in my direction!!!! I had no time to increase the speed, these are big birds with slow wing beats (thank goodness) but they cover a lot of ground very quickly.

It doesn't help that I'm still fumbling my way around all the knobs and dials on the D500:confused:

I'm just razzing you!:)

I know what you're saying. These big birds can get up to speed pretty fast. I shot a blue heron today as she was walking along the bank fishing. I took a few shots, and as I took my eye off the viewfinder, she took off. I had maybe 2 shots before she was far enough away where I stopped shooting.

I also shot some Cormorant in flight. None of them came out decent enough to save.

Got a few BIF's today - still working on my BIFFING skills.
I think the TC does not help when it comes to BIF shots.

In part I needed to have a faster shutter speed for BIF shots. close but no cigar on these ones.
