Looks a bit older to be as I woulnd't expect it to be so dark yet, but could it have been a Fledgling? It's the right time of year for them.

I did wonder but as you say its a bit too dark and it doesn't have the soft bits at the sides of its beak,there are a pair of sparrow hawks nesting nearby so it could have had a run in with one of those.

Thats an adult male bird. Fledglings are a brown colour with that yellow bit that extends back from the beak
