Wev, is that a deformed upper beak?
I doubt it, but don't know for sure. I see a few like that every year and it may be a breeding season exaggeration on fully mature males. It is very efficient for digging worms.

In all seriousness, I've never seen any robins with beaks like that one. Perhaps it's great for digging, but I wonder how much trouble it has with picking things up.
