This must be one of the most photographed birds in the state of PA right now. I spoke to a couple of people who drove for 2 1/2 hrs just to see the family. I think she was getting tired of all the paparazzi.

What's the story on the owl? And whereabouts exactly? Used to live in Emmaus a long time ago.

The family is in Ephrata. Because of the terrain they are almost eye level from where you can photograph them. There is another known nest in York County but it is rather high up and much more difficult to photograph, however it can be done.

Cool! Is the excitement about this particular species of owl (which is it, anyway) or is it just rare to see nesting owls? Excuse my ignorance

Great Horned Owls are common as far as owls go in PA but it is hard to find a nest that you can photograph. Since they mostly hunt at night it is seldom that you see them out and about. So when you have a nest this close it brings out the birders. It is a lot like Bald Eagle nests. Around but hard to photograph when you do find them.

Here is a shot of the other Owl nest that is in York County.
