Nice shot Chuck! I hope to own a GTI someday, but as a Dad of a teenage driver handy with a 6 Speed stick, there's no way I'm parking one in our driveway at this time. Up another notch is this SpecR I found the other day:

Thanks, I had a 2006 MINI Cooper S for 10 years, but unfortunately had to sell it due to a bum left knee. The GTI was the only car with an automatic that I considered fun to drive. The DSG automatic is a wonderful gearbox. Like an automatic when in traffic & like a manual when driving in the twisties. I'd have loved an R, but it was more than I cared to spend. A CPO 2013 GTI worked for me & my wallet. :)

I think Mini Coopers are the cat's pajamas -- just so neat. Thanks for your appraisal of the GTI's DSG Automatic. I've driven nothing but sticks for 35+ Years and my knees are fine ..... for now. Knowing that the DSG is a good gearbox will help me equip the car with an eye to the future when my knees aren't so fine.

I had some fun at the Dealer messing with my D5100 on a Sunday some time ago:

Nice detail shot of a MK7 GTI. Two of my friends have just bought them. I drove manual gearboxes from 16 to 64. You sure do get used to them making the change to an autobox a hard thing to do. After a year in my GTI I'm finally not trying to push the missing clutch peddle down.

Heavens no. I think that is just a designation that denotes a very thrifty combination of motor and transmission. Despite that, it has very good pickup and lots of zip.

That is a long time ago. I have no idea what I was driving in 1972. My former brother-in-law drove a small Datsun that he put over 400,000 miles on. He was very proud of that but when he contacted Datsun to tell them of that they did not seem impressed. He was quite crestfallen.
