Don't know what the species is, but it wouldn't let me get close and with the gray dim light this morning, I couldn't get anything sharper.

I just can't get decent focus when its up in the euc -- low light and too much going on visually

This is where manual focus comes into play. Next time if AF hunts or cannot lock, switch to MF and up the exposure speed.

Unless I am on a tripod where I can use live-view, I find MF useless to try. I can simple not see clearly enough in the viewfinder when shooting at distance -- what looks perfectly sharp comes out a blur. In this case, it's just my normal shakiness and the limitations of the lens at the long end in iffy light.

The "Red Arrows" are so hard to get good images of when they are flying towards each other... before you know it they are past each other

It was dark so I had to use flash and wouldn't you know it, I forgot and had the shutter speed above my synch speed! I had proof that both Bigfoot and the Loch Ness Monster existed, crap!!!!!!!!!
