please critique

i have two photos in my D7000 album (sorry i couldnt get them on here) of my daughter, please ignore the other one, it was just a test to get it uploaded, i was having problems uploading.

The photo in her studio, i have been having a real hard time with the lighting, althought its a huge improvement over last weeks efforts, the other outside was under a cloudy sky.

Please dont hold back, i have big shoulders, i will appreicate the comments as her state finals are next week and i want to get some good shots.

I believe in his original post he left it out and then edited it a few minutes later and inserted it. Either that, or my eyes are getting worse than I thought! LOL

You need to watch the background. Both are quite busy and in full focus which detracts from the main subject.

Maybe crank up the aperture and zoom in as much as you can to blur the background.

I like how you're at her eye level. Try zooming in on her face and get in as close as you can (obviously you don't want to distract her or others).

Oh, and don't knock overcast/cloudy days. They are great at giving you even light and removing harsh shadows.

On some sunny days, I've often waited for a cloud to block and disperse the sun before taking the shot.

I thought the 1st pic was a spot the ball, the hoop is very distracting and nothing to do with the shot, sorry.

The second pic background is a little distracting, but what a great shot showing concentration and commitment to the sport.
That would be a great shot as a flyer for the karate club/group.

I agree with the others, backgrounds are a bit busy and you may want to try a wider aperture for more speed and a better background. Would also help us if you posted the Exif data.

Scott you are correct (and very quick) i thought i had got the link added before someone had looked, the four minute gap shown in the reason for editing was to fix a typo.

Pic 1, info F4.2, 1/1600 ISO 800 34mm FL Manual mode W.B auto and no flash.

Pic 2 F4.8 1/50 48mm FL and the rest the same.

Sorry but i thought you could already see this info, pic1 was just taken out of frustration after being inside the hall, i was just trying to freeze her and get a sharp image, didnt think about what was in the shot, but will keep it in mind for future.

Again thanks for the feedback, i was about to give up on the manual mode, but kept at it and reading up on others posting, get there someday i hope!

Since the backgrounds were mentioned already, I'll just say that as far as capturing the Henri Cartier-Bresson moment, in addition to the intensity and focus of the subject on her activities, I'd say they are very nice treatments of your subject.

Personally, I see nothing wrong with these shots, other than some distracting elements in the photos themselves, AND....they are both ever so slightly out of focus. Perhaps soft would be a better word for it. Since I could see no EXIF data, I can't tell what mode you shot them in. If she was moving, Shutter Mode would have been the preferred method, at around 1/250th or higher. What aperture was used? ISO? What lens? Did you set White Balance to the lighting in the studio? This information is important to determine what needs to be addressed by way of critique.

By the way, she's a cutie, and I love the look of determination on her face. Having been in the martial arts myself many moons ago, I know what's she going through.

Background, background, background.

The 2nd shot really shows her intense focus --- it also shows the bathroom doors.

I wasted an entire getting some great shots at a race one day and was dumbfounded when I downloaded them and saw background littered with porta-pottys.

Thanks Jack, the info is on post 8 of this thread, the lens i used was my Nikkor 18-105, i did try to set the white balance in the studio but kept getting the no good.

Just an update to this, Rebecca won a gold and brozne medal at her contest in Ojai last weekend, it was worth the 4 hour drive home thru LA's traffic.
