5-27-13: Non birds post.

In the woods by the side of the road going up a steep hill, is an old New York Telephone sign. It was definitely there way before the breakup of the telephone companies in the late 1980s. I have two versions, color and B&W. I like both. The B&W definitely gives it an entirely different feel. Let me know which you prefer. TIA. Taken with my D7000, AF-S 55-200mm non-VR zoom, ISO 400, f/6.3, 1/125s.

I like the B&W myself. I think it is because the age of the sign and maybe my age as well:D .

I think the B&W compliments the vintage aspect. It's really weird when you think of signs from the early 1980s as vintage. :) The color version projects an entirely different feel. I am still leaning toward the color version.

This is yesterday's photo. I had lots of problems trying to upload the image because my internet connection had basically tanked most of the evening. We have had a lot of problems the past few days with our internet and phone connections because of the weather.

Anyway, here is my photo for 5-28. It rained all day and evening yesterday so all I have to offer is the opportunistic feline photo.

5-29-13: Bugs

I'm dividing today's posting into two, distinct subjects: bugs and flowers.

I was looking at our rhododendron this afternoon because the flowers are just starting to open up. The bugs turned out better than the flowers. :)

This guy was crawling around on a leaf for a while.

Flies are gross, but still interesting to photograph.

5-29-13: Flowers

One of the few flowers the deer do not seem to find palatable, is columbine. I love this color. It looks like velvet.

It's amazing what one sees when taking a short walk around the yard.

Our rhododendron bush is almost in full bloom. I was taking some photos of the blooms when I saw this bumblebee buzzing from flower to flower.

We have two tulip maple trees. I find them just so nice and different than your typical maples. The way the sun shown through in the first photo was just beautiful.

A moment later, a firefly landed on the same flower and started crawling inside the base of the flower. I did use fill flash on this photo.

All photos were taken with my D7000, AF 105mm f/2.8 micro Nikkor, ISO 320, and f/10.

5-31-13: Part 1: Birds

I'm breaking today's postings into two separate posts: Birds and Not Birds.

This morning, when I was walking back onto the porch with the dog, I saw a ruby-throated hummingbird just sitting on a wire. I was rather surprised because I've never seen one just sitting around.

This afternoon, I saw these two robins flitting around. I think they have a nest nearby.

5-31-13: Part 2: Non-Birds

Last night, when I took the dog out, I heard our neighborhood bear scratching on a tree in the woods nearby. This afternoon, I decided to take a quick walk into the woods to see what kind of damage to trees the bear had done. What I found on the back of the tree that he had been scratching on was a whole lot more interesting than the bear scratchings.

Fungal Feast

I walked a little further into the woods and came across garbage that had been dumped probably 25-30 years ago. Note that the metal bucket and enamel-coated tub are rusted, but not the toilet seat! People used to just dump their garbage in the woods instead of paying for trash removal. Fortunately, that does not happen as much any more.

Today is an interesting potpourri of pictures.

Gee, second day in a row that I took my camera out with me when I took the dog out in the morning and there was something interesting to photograph. :) I am not sure if this crow is Heckle or Jeckle, just sitting on a utility pole.

Hey, Heckle, Where Are You?

Okay, the gaggle of geese showcased below is the same ones as in post #454. Same pond, same geese, different day.

Generations

The crow, and both geese photos were taken with my D7000, AF-S 55-200mm Nikkor non-VR lens, ISO 200, f/10 (for the crow), and f/9 (for the geese).

My rhododendron is finally in full bloom. The first photo is the way it actually looks. In the second one, I played with selective color. This photo was taken with my D7000, AI 35mm f/1.4 Nikkor lens (yes, manual focus but pinpoint sharp), ISO 200, f/8, 1/640 s.

6-2-13: Part 1. I'm breaking today's images into two posts. It will make sense once you see them. All photos today were taken with my D3000, 55-200mm Nikkor non-VR zoom lens, ISO 400, f/8. These doves have been hanging around lately. I think they have a nest nearby but I haven't found out where, yet. Anyway, I know they are a dull, common bird, but I found them quite entertaining this morning. Here are two photos of this pair.

I Needed That Stretch
153 Doves-130602-02_1.jpg

The way these two were walking around reminded me of an old cartoon I saw when I was little. In it, were two large cats (I think a lion and tiger), walking in opposite direcctions in their cages. When they would pass each other, one would say to the other, "Bread and butter."

"Bread & Butter"

We have a very large, old rhododendron right next to the house in front of a window. There are always birds, espcecially dark-eyed juncos, in the bush. I have been trying to get photos of the birds for a few weeks now. There is a screen on the window so I have to shoot through the screen. That screen really softens the focus. I ended up with three okay shots. Below is one of them.

Humidity Just Kills My 'Do

Finally, what walk in the woods be complete without the opportunistic fungus photo. :) I have no idea what type of fungus this is, but it is on several trees.

I was watching this pair of robins flit around today when I realized one was a fledgling and the other was the parent. I thought it was a cute series and wanted to share.

All photos today were taken with my D3000, 55-200mm Nikkor non-VR zoom lens, ISO 400, f/8. The first one was with a shutter speed of 1/500s. The remaining three were with a shutter speed of 640.
