Photos with a Kit Lens

I haven't used mine for portraits but wouldn't say it is ideal. 55mm end will be long enough on crop bodies but at f5.6 it isn't really going to give you the shallow depth of field you might like to isolate the subject from the background. A 50mm f1.8 would do a better job, although still not the very best option.
If you do get a 18-55mm make sure you get a version with VR.
Personally I'll either replace mine with something like the Sigma 17-50mm f2.8 or Nikkor 18-140mm. Before that though I'll probably get a Tokina 11-16mm or similar for landscapes and I already have 35mm 1.8, 50mm 1.8 and 55mm 2.8 macro which cover the 18-55 mid to longer end well and do a better job.
So the Nikkor 18-140 would work for portraits i ask o nly becaue that is the lens my d7200 came with.

I haven't used the 18-140mm. I'm sure it would work for portraits but it won't necessarily be the optimum lens for the job. How important are the portraits you are shooting and what will they be used for? 18-140mm won't be as sharp, fast or have as shallow a depth of field as say an 85mm f/1.8 at the same focal length, that may or may not be important to you depending on what is required.

These will be used for marketing for the US Army so they will be important, they need to be good. Most likely they will decide if we get the extended contract.

Perhaps you could start a thread with any specific questions you have about shooting these portraits. There are a lot of experienced portrait photographers here who could help you out, I'm not one of them. Perhaps take some similar type portraits with your 18-140mm or whichever lens you have which you think is best and post them for critique/advice.
