great shot! the perspective really adds to it. It does look like the camera was higher then it actually was, but I think that is because of the focal length, and the physical height of the stairs, no?

Thank you everyone for your replies.
I believe I am wrong in stating the height was 18 inches. It was probably closer to 30 inches... my mistake.
Yes there are a couple of spots on the lens. I cant figure out how to get rid of them without damaging the front of the lens tho.
Yes I agree this probably should be a blog post, I thought about that after I had posted this.
In fact I think I actually have another shot of this subject where I am literally on the ground.
Perhaps I should make a blog entry if I can find the other shot... repost this one as well... and in addition provide a diagram as to where I placed the two flash units.

I dont think my intention is clear at all and I dont really know how to explain what I was looking for.... so... lets just leave it at that.

tracsoft, thank you for looking. I understand what you say about fill flash, however this is a concept I that portray as a photojournalistic excersise. If I were to use fill flash, in my opinion, I am crossing over into portrait and the people look posed and unnatural. When I indulge myself in this particular subject I am looking for a concept rather than perfect lighting.

That is why I said "fill" flash and not flash. You can still get the look you are after even with flash. Use bounce, or just a very low level flash.

I like the concept here as well, so good job with that, but you definitely need faster shutter speeds. There is too much motion blur. So fill flash makes it look more posed and un-natural? Have you looked at the photos you posted? One appears to have a woman sleeping while standing? The strongest image here is the first one, but it too needs tome added light.

ok I have had dinner now.. so my brain is working a little more than it was before I ate.
These were all shot in manual mode with the shutter at about 1/50 sec and 1/40 sec. The aperture was at F2.8
What I was looking for here was a sense of motion, a feeling of portraying the chaotic choreographed rush that is a typical day in this busy cafe. Rather than focus on freezing motion and capturing balanced lighting, I was looking for a sense of intensity that matched the loud clattering of plates, and rushing of people.
I did this kind of thing before and used flash, bounced off the ceiling, but I have had notoriously poor results with flash. I either get it spot on... or it looks just nasty.
Perhaps I should have explained my intentions in greater detail in the beginning. Be that as it may.. this is what I was aiming for. I also realize that sometimes what I see in a photograph is VERY different from what other people see. Sometimes I will produce work that is very ambigious, not imediately obvious, or sometimes not at all.

Ok, so i get what you were going for...I got that from the beginning. Having a "sense of motion" in an image is OK if that's what you were going for. What I am telling you is that is not what I see. I see blurry images. If you bumped your shutter speed and cranked the ISO you could have gotten a bit more light in without using a flash. you could have had the faces or the important parts of the photos in focus, and still got the motion blur you were looking for. Half of those are images are just out of focus throughout. Also, a sleep standing girl, and another girl texting and eating a banana hardly portrays "Chaos".

Either way, I am going to keep my opinions to myself as I realized this isn't a critique section and no matter what anyone else says other than "atta boy" you will say you meant to do that. Just trying to help.

I am not offended by your honest opinions Joe. In fact I appreciate it, rather than "atta boy", because that doesnt give me anything to think about.
At first I thought I had nailed it, and I may have been happy with that concept, but with critical and unflattering opinion "at my door", you and tracsoft have given me reason to ask myself... did I really achieve what I wanted?
I have to ask myself was I even in the right frame of mind here, or did I just not even think this out.
So ... say what you want to say... I would rather that, than... atta boy.

Im not seeing it. I mean, the road is kind of crappy. is that the "neglected" part? replace all of the late model cars on the right with clunkers, and kick some garbage cans over or something. Just not feeling this one.

I have struggled with an appropriate title for this photo. All I can say is that the light, the wet road etc was attractive to me.

Several of your photo threads have been merged into this single, new thread. Generally, if you're going to share your work on a continual basis, either keep it all in a thread like this, or start a blog.

Ya know what? I like these!.....not the last one (with the green tinge in it), but all the rest. Love the play of light, the shadows....even the processing. Nice work, Ian.
