Photography Teacher Required...

I have loved photography from a very early age, I have never gone to an occassion without my camera, albiet, my mobile phone camera!

I have always used a point and shoot camera and have recently (finally) purchased a D5100.

I have a vast interest in photography, mainly taking pictures of family (portraits)/sports and generally my kids.

I've purchased this camera to get the professional look in my photo's.

I am therefore looking for a teacher/Professional photographer to explain the photographers lingo! Along with what the D5100 is capable of doing. I would like to know what technology I have in my hands and what it is capable of doing.

If there is anyone out there that can help me please do get in touch.

Well, welcome to the forum to start with.

Concerning your demand, it would be much easier if you could tell us where about you are located. There are quite a large number of youTube videos that can help you plus some books that would explain a lot about your camera. But I suggest a book about light and composition to start with as it is the light alone that gives us a photograph.

And then there is practice, and practice. Nothing can replace it.

Hi Marcel,

I am based in East Anglia. Other than practicing, it was really the terminolgy that I wanted a better understanding off.

I suppose I could read the user manual, however, I believe i could learn more from someone who has either used this camera or who has a vast experience in this area.

and I hope you are willing to pay this teacher? I charge 30 dollars an hour when I work with a student one on one,, it is time consuming,,

I do think the human teacher is worth your investment, It might be the best 50 dollars that you have ever invested.

Welcome to the site.

YouTube, Nikonites (and other Nikon sites), the reference manual (not the user manual) and practice are your first teachers (and they're all free).
Books will help too, but obviously cost that little bit more.

If you're really stuck, then do a photography course - Groupon and the like all have deals on beginner one day classes from around the £20 mark I think.

Your thirst for knowledge is appreciated. However, aside from spending some money on a teacher, Google is your best friend. Whatever terminology you want to learn about, just Google it. You can also ask on here. Seriously, if all yoou want to learn is terminology, why hire someone? Read the manual, watch youtube and Google the "terminology" you want to know about. Very simple

Still alive and kicking by their website, as are a lot of other voucher/rewards sites that have popped up.

I think what you're actually referring to is, that there have been numerous complaints made to TSA about Groupon!

I'm more than willing to teach you everything I know about photography for free, yup, 100% free!!.....just cover my travel and lodging from San Diego and I'm there!! :D

Go to a used book store and buy an old book on photography and read it over and over again and then read it a few more times. After that read it a hundred more times. Start you a scrapbook of photos you find to be interesting and try to replicate the shots.

Key words - aperture, shutter speed, ISO/ASA, white balance/color temperature, depth of field...that is a good start.

Trial by fire. Shoot in Manual for a week straight and know a small bit about the very basics. What is aperture, shutter speed and ISO? You don't have to even know a lot, just the very basics of each value. ISO = amplification of light by the sensor. Aperture = how "open" your lens is to receive light. Shutter speed = how fast your shutter fires. Then, just play with everything! Honestly, it's the best way to get your feet wet. You don't need someone to hold your hand.

Truthfully, though, the best way to learn something is to actively do that thing. If there's one thing to take away, its don't read too much about shooting photos. Go out there and actually shoot photos.
