Photography is a sin - Fatwa issued against photography

I'm going to hell then!!

This is a bone of contention amongst Muslims - some say it's OK to photograph others say its not.
Difficult one to really say, as the arguments for and against each have some valid points :)

I have heard from some Muslim folks that it is against their religion to frame people in pictures.
One of my old manager's father had passed away & in respect the office had a nice photo of his dad enlarged and framed & given as a token of condolence, but he wouldn't accept it as his family would really not like it.
Maybe this is stemming from there?

The Amish do not allow their pictures to be taken. There are a couple reasons for this. First they believe that photographs are Graven Images (Thou shalt not make unto thee any graven image, or any likeness of any thing that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth.) Second they believe that it is an act of pride. Because of my job I have been in Amish homes and you will find no pictures paintings etc on the walls. There are some Amish that do not have a problem if you photograph them working in the fields of walking down the street as they did not pose and it is therefore not a pride issue while others will hide their faces.

As far as ID is concerned on PA ID they do not put their photos, however if they need Passports to go to Canada to visit relatives they are allowed by the church to have that photo taken. Many now get passports and use that if they need picture ID.

I guess it all depends on your beliefs. It is what it is.

I have several photos of the Amish, as there are a few communities nearby. While they certainly don't pose for me, they don't mind it either. At one time, I considered publishing a book...even had a publisher very much interested. But my old-fashioned side kicks in, and I don't want to exploit these people. I've opted to just keep the images to myself.

As for photography being a sin. Well...

I'm a huge fan of the other 7, so why not an 8th?

Yeah.....everything is a sin. Unbelievable. I'm quickly losing my tolerance of all the "religious" issues people have, and try to foist on the rest of the world. I'm glad I'm agnostic. And like Browncoat said.....why not an eighth! ;)

There are those within that religion that will not be happy unless they can take all of the followers of that religion back to the stone-age. More importantly, I don't understand why those in the religion let the minority of the religion become the voice.

Never mind... we have that same ignorance of false leaders speaking on behalf of groups they were never annointed to speak for and yet it's accepted as the gospel.

You are right. My son was in Military Intelligence and they had to study the religion and work with a lot of the locals in Iraq and Afghanistan. He said the majority of the locals he worked with were good people. We just tend to hear about the extremes like the man who killed his 8 year old bride on the wedding night by consummating the marriage.

I do like the fact that these religious "nuts" say things like "It is against our religion" yet these religions are meant to date back thousands of years and i'm sure they had never even thought of things like cameras etc.
My Wife is from a Muslim family and so I feel well placed to see first hand what these "nut-jobs" say is not the belief of the majority.
Make it a contest next month to photograph this guy.:D

I take no issue with people believing whatever they want and worshiping in peaceful ways: go adore lawn jockey's, hug trees, dance naked under the moon - full or otherwise - I really don't care. It's when someone wants impose their viewpoint on another that I begin to have issues. Freedom to worship is inherent and far be it from me to judge, but as I like to say, "Your freedom to swing your fist, ends at the tip of my nose."

Don't tell the UK!! The government will ban cameras (Primarily it will prevent them from being photographed being poorly behaved or breaking the law themselves) then use this story as the cover up..

Seen as politically incorrect/offensive to fly the St. Georges flag - there are more bits and bobs but none springing to mind.. Brits aren't allowed to do something in their own country because it offends some religion somewhere..

Britain seems to heavily cater for other religions - Yet go to some other countries and you WILL abide by their dominating religion, or be stoned.. etc etc..

Crazy world we live in..

PS, none of us are going to hell - Jehova's Witnesses say there is no Hell, we just won't be resurrected by Jesus after doomsday (Which is supposed to be happening in the 'end days' - any time after 1914) So Snap away!!... ;)

By the way - I do respect religions, helps people but also destroys people.. I just don't like it forced on me.
