People leaving Facebook

Scott (and others debating business over Facebook), you might try using a 3rd party app like HootSuite to aggregate social networks like Facebook and Twitter.

I'm only just getting started with HootSuite (work sponsored), but had looked into it in the past. What I like about these 3rd party tools is that they are accessing the social networks via APIs rather than the usually end-user interface. What does that mean to me as a regular user? For Twitter, I don't see promoted tweets (aka ads), only the tweets posted by the people/companies I follow. Likewise for Facebook, I can eliminate the homegrown apps like Messenger and instead track the people I'm interested in without all the clutter and filtering that Facebook provides in the newsfeed.

If you decide that you need to keep access to social media for work purposes, it might just help keep those contacts a little more focused.

Facebook without "Purity" would be a no go for me, but I have connected with friends and family from Florida to California, and from Texas to Minnesota, and SOME of ya even outside the country. That, combined with the fact that I generate most of my side business through my photography page on FB (NO boosting, though), means I won't abandon it any time soon.

I've also found it very handy for group info/chatter. Our photography Life Group from church has a closed FB page, as do a couple of other charity organizations I'm involved with, and it's much easier to use than email groups. I check it throughout the day, but not every 5 minutes (like here, LOL). When FaceBook has gone it's way, and something better comes around to replace it... I'll be there as well.

I don't really bother with facebook, only when someone sends me message I have a look.

A few people at work have been sacked due to comments they have put on facebook about work issues.

I have connected with old service buddies from more than 40 years ago, for that reason alone I would not leave FB. Besides that I run a FB page with more than 11,000 members, gaining on the average of 35 each week, still interesting and still fun since I joined back in 2010.

I joined FB 5 years ago to create a group for my high school's reunion. The nice thing with FB groups is the ability to make the group private so personal info can be shared and kept within the group. All my FB friends are respectful towards one another so there isn't any animosity, and I block all the game apps so the info doesn't appear in my news feed.

For those who wish to see the most recent posts first rather than the top stories, you can either do what Jake posted, or save this link as it will load the most recent posts: https://www.facebook.com/?sk=h_chr.

When I was traveling 40 weeks a year it was my one way to stay connected with people I know. Through it I have reconnected with countless old friends and deepened some formerly casual relationships. I check it in the morning with my coffee and again in the evening. There's a lot of noise there, and I've filtered and blocked people and sites that make it a nuisance, but with my current roster of rather well read friends I get access to better and more accurate news than I'd get from the mass media.

As for business, it's almost useless. I've gotten more action from well tagged posts on Twitter and Instagram, because I will not pay FB to "boost" my posts.

For those who hate the ads and annoying FB add-ons, I highly recommend a browser add-on called FB Purity (F.B. Purity - Clean up and Customize Facebook) that allows you to selectively block the various ads and sites that they stick in your news feed, as well as guarantee that you're looking at the "Most Recent" feed and not "Top Stories" as defined by FB.

I just stumbled across FB Purity this morning...somehow I missed the comments in this thread regarding it. FB Purity is fantastic. With it I removed the Trending column, blocked sponsored posts and games, removed the ads, and was able to stretch my newsfeed across my computer screen. It's quite impressive.
