Phoenix Zoo around mid morning. D700 and 600mm f/4 ED-IF AIS and TC-300. A monopod was an absolute necessity with this combination. In fact, the monopod stayed attached to the "beast" the whole time. It is simply too heavy and unwieldy to easily hand hold and focus at the same time, most especially at an effective focal length of 1200mm. The image is almost monochromatic with these white pelicans, only their orange gular pouches add much in the way of color. We have both the brown and gray pelicans at home. The brown pelicans are actually endangered, why I don't have a clue. They are certainly everywhere around our beaches and inland waterways. In the mornings year round you can see at least 5 or 6 dozen of them hanging out on artificial jetties we have around our bays.
