Pelican - Square or Widescreen?

This is a recent shot I took at the St. Petersburg Pier in Florida. I'm debating about whether or not to crop this 8x8 or 10x10 (square) or go with a widescreen crop. Wondering if you have suggestions. Is there too much water above pelican head? Too much on left and right sides? Too much stump on the bottom?

A preliminary shot can be seen below, but I'm not sold on if it's the best representation of the scene:

I personally like the one on the bottom. Looks more natural. The one at the top....the horizon is slanted, too much surrounding water.
