Typically the slower the subject the slower your shutter speed will have to be to get the same effect. Both images are 1/320th of a second, but because of the difference in speed you have a different effect.

Slow shutterspeed and football is going to be a bit harder since the player's body is moving one way and the rest is going in multiple directions. BMX and skateboarding shouldn't be a problem. If you can use a monopod to help steady your camera and lens, you can drop below the 1/focal length and if you have VR that will help too.

I can see what you mean. Those shots are good examples. Good point about team sports too... I will just have to practice and discover what works for each type of shot. Thanks.
