Oppilas Remote Control

Hi ... new member here and will update profile shortly but wanted to ask first if anyone has played with an Oppilas wireless remote control? I purchased this off Amazon and can of course return it but I wanted to give it a chance first.

It doesn't work :( ... at least not for me.

2 piece system: receiver mounts on hot shoe, cable from receiver to GPS port on side of the camera.
transmitter is hand held, obviously. 4 settings ... single shot / multi shot / bulb / self timer.

They appear to be talking to each other. When I press the transmitter button, in any mode, the receiver light flashes. But ... the camera itself doesn't react. I've tried this on each mode on the camera ... P / A / S / M with no difference. Receiver flashes, camera does nothing. The button on the remote if held partially down is supposed to activate auto focus, just like the shutter button on the camera .... nothing happens. If the button on the remote is pushed all the way down, the shot should be taken ... nothing happens.

Before I go off fretting that my camera has a problem, I'd like to ask here if anyone is familiar with this, and / or if there is some other setting on the D3100 that I have to set to "tell" the camera to act on the remote.

Any suggestions?

Thanks ... Phil Z

Just updated / created my profile.

Camera is a D3100
Remote is a Pixel Oppilas DC2. Search Amazon for "oppilas dc2" and you'll find a slew of them

Thanks!!

I was thinking the same thing, but that GPS port is the only port on the camera that matches the connector that came with the remote. And in the user's guide for the camera, that port is shown as the connection point for the Nikon MC-DC2 remote, but that's a wired remote not a wireless. That port is also shown as the port for the GP1 GPS unit.

So, while under almost all other circumstances, I would agree with you Fred ... obviously a remote cable poked into a GPS slot isn't going to work ... but because Nikon uses that same port for its own remote, I'm not so sure.

Still looking for other ideas, especially if someone in here has actually used one.

For what it's worth, I have sent a note to the Amazon distributor about this, and will also be sending one to the manufacturer. send a note to the

Also I forgot to mention. The unit I use is the Photix WXD-188. If the camera does not lock on focus it will not fire. Check you,re settings to see if the default settings for auto focus is set at.

Thanks FastGlass. I'm not totally off base then. :)

On your D90 (I'm not at all familiar with that camera) other than plugging the right things into the right places, did you have to change any settings on the camera in order to make it work?

And this leads me to another sort of related question ... on these cameras, is there a way to set a start/stop long exposure that works like the traditional Time setting on old SLRs ... press the shutter button to open it ... shutter remains open until you press it again and then it closes.

This mode mainly differs from bulb setting in that with bulb the shutter's only open as long as you're holding down the button; with a time exposure you can open the shutter, walk away, and then come back when you want to close it. Allows for some amazingly long exposures ... I've seen one where a guy took a 9 minute exposure of a sunset over a lake .. beautiful glass surface on the lake; beautiful sunset. He did use an ND filter to cut WAY down on the light ... couldn't have taken a shot with that long an exposure without it. Not sure either what ISO he used.

It's that kind of thing I *really* want to try. And some long exposures @ railroad crossings also.

Fast ... autofocus is on ... not sure what you mean by default setting for autofocus.

Fred ... thanks. Maybe I should trade the D3100 in for a D7000? It's only a very small mortgage's worth of financing, right? LOL.

Hey philz, I believe all I did was plug it in and presto. Allthough when I first tried it I was sitting in my office and tried to get it to work. I then realized the the camera was trying to focus but couldn't because of what I was aiming it at. I also use it on my D3s. Although I use a differant cord for that body. Some people have their cameras set up to take a shot if the shutter button is fully depressed weather autofocus has acheived focus or not. I'm not 100% sure but I do believe the remote will not work unless the camera can lock on a subject when trying to focus. And to answer you're last statement. I would trade for the 7000. Primarily because the 3100 does not have an internal focus motor like the 7000. I like the feature simply because you have a wider market on lenses that will auto focus.

Well guys ... and this is QUITE embarrassing to admit in front of you fine folk ... but ... apparently for all this here new fangled electronic ions through the air and smoke in the box stuff to work properly ... it really DOES matter whether or not the tab A is inserted in the slot B sufficiently. All I had to do was push the tab into the slot a little bit deeper and it works, as advertised.

1) I feel like a total dolt
2) I'm glad I got the chance to meet you all and ... seriously ... I appreciate the help and you can't get rid of me that quick. This is a great board, I'm here to stay

:triumphant: <=== woohoo!!

Hi Philz,

I've been having the same problem. What do you mean by "... tab A is inserted in the slot B sufficiently."

Been e-mailing the manufacturer since Xmas!!!

Thanks

He means that he did not have it plugged in completely. Unplug it and then plug it back in and make sure it seats completely.
