Offshore purchases

Are you talking about new or used? If new, I would not venture down that dark hole. I believe there is a thread on here from a few months ago that discusses Nikon warranties and what they cover/don't cover and where it's covered/not covered. Simply put, I would not purchase brand new equipment from overseas.

i am aware of nikon's warranty. There is a lot of stuff on the net from asia, new and used.
Any "nites" that have bought equipment for sites not in the usa i would like to know your experience with these dealers. Looks like you can save some money or are they ripoffs.

Could you perhaps tell us which websites you are thinking of? Again, i would avoid buying anything new. You say there seems to be some savings... Can you give an example? Personally, i stick to canadian and US sites.

I've used DigitalRev in HongKong.. and spoken to them a few times on the phone.

I can't fault them. Very very fast service. I order a D600 & 60mm lens on Friday afternoon and it arrived on Monday at my door in the UK. That is outstanding.

They have their own warranty service, if you have a problem you can either send it back or get it repaired locally and they will refund. I've heard bad stories on the web, but you can find a bad story about any retailer anywhere in the world on the web, people like to tell everyone of the bad experiences but the 1000s of happy customers have no need to tell their story.

I've bought a D600, 3 Nikkor lenses and numerous other bits from them, everything has been exemplary. All been genuine and as one would expect.

curious to know how much you actually saved? Im looking at the d7100 body only and they have it priced at $1354. I can get it at my local for $1095. Not much savings there, even with sales tax on my local price. this may not be the case with all cameras, but in the many years that i have followed the site, the have been more expensive on the most part.

Some of the savings you see make it tempting, i limit it to amounts of money i wouldn't be too upset at losing if it went wrong, things like lens hoods had a couple of those from china at about £2 with free postage.

Well nikonpup seemed more interested in the reliability, obviously savings depend on lots of local factors.

I did save quite a bit. The D600 body was £300 cheaper, ~$460, than i could find in the UK, including ebay retails etc, it was probably £500 cheaper than a high street retailer. However Nikon were doing a £150 rebate on this body that i was aware of but didn't realise was not applicable to purchases outside the Europe. So in reality i saved £150 on the body. As i lost that rebate.

On the 3 Nikkor lens, lowpro bag & memory I probably saved 20% ~ about £200

So all in all significant savings.

I was initially concerned about the warranty issues, but to be honest i've heard better about DigitialRev's service than i have Nikon. I also have a brother in Hong Kong, which gives me a little (probably false) security.

I spent £2,200 which would likely have cost me £2,700 in the UK saving £500 / $770. Not insignificant.

*****

You Yanks do seem to be an innately suspicious of buying from foreign retailers. I'm not sure we are quite as suspicious here in Europe, it seems totally normal to buy from Asian retailers to me and anyone I know here in the UK. But if i'm spent over £500 with any online retailer i'll check them out, I'm just as suspicious of UK ones as i am of foreign ones!

Don't forget ALL this gear is made in Asia!
