Off camera flash

I’m new to the forum. Apologies if this has been answered before but I’m getting frustrated trying to find a simple answer, if there is one.
I use a Coolpix L830. It’s a great camera and I am well aware of its limitations.
I am looking to find a way to use off camera flash with it but can’t seem to find a straight answer. My research tells me that if I can find a flash, probably a speed light with an optical slave setting then thus should be triggered by the L830’s on camera flash. Am I right or not?
Any recommendations or advice would be appreciated
