Not which lens..... rather which camera?!?

So, major dilemma going on here :)

I finally talked my wife into letting me take our oldest daughter who is 6 on a weeks holiday to the croatian island of Brac in order to do a little relationship building (i have had to play "bad policeman" quite a bit this year).

Now the question is what camera should I take? I ideally would like to take the D7K but would always be worrying about it, I could always take the D3100 which is smaller and lighter and not be so worried but would have to compromise on the light sensitivity during the evening. Or do I just say hell to it all, leave the cumbersome DSLRs at home, it will be a beach/snorkelling holiday so just take the Sony HDR GW55 which I can also use underwater?

Decisions decisions decisions......

Or should I just sell the lot, cancel the holiday and buy a D800E? :):)

Is the reason for your trip to build a better relationship with your daughter?

Or, to take photographs?

Leave all your cameras at home.

Well... I guess I'd have to ask why you bought a D7000 if not for once in a lifetime occasions as spending an extended holiday with your kid? I don't see why one couldn't do a little bonding and photograph it as well, but that's me.

Not too mention your Nikon is a tough little bit of equipment. My cameras have survived some pretty tough go's I'll tell you what. They take a licking and keep on ticking, to steal the tag line from another, entirely different product. So I'd say take your D7000 and quit being such a worry wort.

In spite of the thread being "closed" I would take the Sony. This sounds like daddy daughter time. I would say otherwise if the daughter were older and she were an aspiring photographer.

you have given me an idea, take the sony for the sporty beachy part, and take the D3100 for teaching my daughter photography! she is always asking if she can take some photos!

Absolutely take that Sony - it would be a shame not to record so many beautiful scenes while both of you having a good time, swimming, bathing, diving... The Brac island (pronounced as "Bruch") is one of the IDEAL places to spend summer holidays...

Take the D7100, it's bonding time with your daughter and take the best camera you have to record that for both of you in the future. That's what photographs are, a split second of your memory.
If you dragged your daughter out looking for the best photo opportunity you could find then that would be different. Spend all the quality time you can with her and save the memories with a photograph.
Your travel insurance will cover the camera and gear if you have a mishap, nobody can replace a memory.

There you go. I would suggest shooting in one of the auto modes so that it's about taking the picture and not about having to learn all the frustrating stuff of manual or photo composition. At 6 she just wants to take a picture.
