Nikon Series E lenses

Hi folks,

Just done a quick search on here but didn't find much about Nikon E series lenses, so I thought I'd start a thread to see what experiences people have had with them and general impressions and opinions about them.

I'm aware that they were a cheaper option with a more plastically feel but I'm more interested in how they perform optically.

The reason I ask is that I'd like a faster lens than what I have for photographing badgers in low light and the 100mm or 135mm f/2.8 versions might fit the bill for that.

I have no cash really to put towards camera gear for a while, unless it is dirt cheap on ebay and that's why I started looking at these. If it can get me the images I want (sharp badger image in low light) then I don't care too much about other drawbacks. If it can't then I'll not bother with these at all.

So please let me know what you think of these lenses, even if its just to say they make good paper weights and not much else.

I've heard the 50 1.8 "pancake" is a great lens but I already have the 1.8d and a 55 2.8 so I'm well covered in that area.

I only have one (the nifty fifty) but I've rarely heard much negativity against them. I think there were 7 total, and some people like to collect them all. It's not too pricey, since they all can be had fairly inexpensively.

That sounds like a fun plan. I imagine they would go very well on a mirror less body considering how small and light they are.

How easy would it be to clean fungus from an 100mm e series lens? Just interested to hear if it would ever be worth attempting.

Probably not worth the effort,if you have to take elements out you will most likley not be able to center them when refitting

A friend of mine has the Nikon series E 70-210mm f/4 which he doesn't use a great deal, so I'm hoping to buy it from him. I know he paid £39 for it so I wouldn't be paying any more than that.

What I wanted to check is the use of this lens with a teleconverter on my D7100 and D3200. I believe the TC-14B (or possibly TC-14A?) and the TC-200 and TC-201 teleconverters are compatible with it. Are they also comparable with my cameras? My googling keeps giving me information about newer teleconverers which is frustrating.
With the D7100 will I retain metering using the TC-14 and TC-201?

I believe these teleconvertors are also compatible with my AIS 55mm 2.8 but if I'm wrong please letme know.

The E lens you mention will work with a TC14A and the 55mm 2.8.
Yes they will meter. They may be a little deterioration of IQ particularly the E zoom. Using a TC multiplies the focal length and aperture of the lens fitted but retains the closest focus distance of the lens

Thanks, I might see if I can pick one up on ebay. Probably will go with the 1.4 to retain a reasonable aperture with the 70-210mm f/4. Just trying to convince my mate to sell it to me.
